Your identity is a lover loved by the Lover. Allow me to explain…
You haven’t been saved more than a few moments if you haven’t heard someone in the church tell you that our main goal in the Christian faith is to be servants of God. “You gotta serve the Lord, brother. Hold fast to Jesus and be a servant of all.” There is nothing wrong with serving the Lord. There is something wrong with the mindset that we are only servants. Jesus is not just king, but he’s a lover and a father and a friend. We serve our families and friends out of love, but it’s not serving the way I’ve heard it preached for so long. So many preach that serving the Lord is sweat and toil and it’s always motivated by righteous duty and seriousness. That’s not the gospel! That’s not the way of our glorious Mr. LoveDoodle.
You are a Lover
We, the human race, are lovers of God (Psalm 116). We get to be wrapped up completely in this fairy tale romance with the God of all creation (SoS 1:7; SoS 1:12)! The Bible calls Jesus our bridegroom for goodness sake (SoS 3:12)! It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that a bride is madly in love and excited to share life with her bridegroom! We are the bride of Christ! He is our Heavenly Husband!
God gets completely whacked and knock down drunk off the love you have for Him. Song of Songs 4:9 describes this beautifully: “With one flash of your eyes I am undone by your love…you leave me breathless–I am overcome by merely a glance from your worshiping eyes, for you have stolen my heart. I am held hostage by your love and by the graces of righteousness shining upon you.”
WOW! This is amazing. God is ecstatic about the way you love Him. He looks at you and is radically undone by how absolutely perfect you are! Don’t think you’re perfect? Think again. Perfection lives inside of you! God looks at you and sees you at the end of this board game called life and is pleased with the result. Remember, God will always finish the work that He started in you (Philippians 1:6)! That doesn’t meant that He sees you as an evil, wicked sinner. That means that He looks at you, completely refined and perfect, BECAUSE OF JESUS!
That verse in Song of Songs 4 goes on in verse 10 to say that “your love is my finest wine–intoxicating and thrilling. And your sweet, perfumed praises–so exotic, so pleasing.”
You bring ultimate pleasure to God! You intoxicate Him with your love and praise. Your life is thrilling to Mr. GlorrrrrAY.
You are Loved
God’s love is so huge! Here are a few of many verses in the ol’ B.I.B.L.E that proves it: “For God so loved the world, he gave his only son…(John 3:16).”; “But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ— by grace you have been saved … (Ephesians 2:4-5).”
God loves us so much that “he refused to let sin, satan, or hell get in the way of a loving relationship with His kids (from Outrageous Love by Tony Seigh).”
God, the Father, had the solution to the problem of sin figured out long before you came on the scene. The entire Old Testament points to the solution: Jesus, The Christ, Mr. Wonderful. It took blood sacrifice to eradicate sin. However, the sacrifice of bulls and goats and such wasn’t a really great plan. It was never God’s plan to make animal sacrifice performed by priests a forever plan. Jesus was always the solution to sin. He was always the one chosen, BECAUSE OF LOVE, to completely remove the curse of sin from us. Jesus is the requirement the law demands to eradicate sin.
You are a Garden
Song of Songs 4:12 “My darling bride, my private paradise, fastened to my heart….” You are God’s private paradise. You are His secret garden. One version of Song 4:12 calls you a “garden enclosed.” Your inner self, which is much bigger than your outside, is where God dwells. This garden, this secret, intimate garden, is such a special and romantic place only meant for you and God alone! Private paradise. His private paradise.
You are not merely a human being. You are so much greater than that! You are a garden. A garden where you and God dwell together in perfect romantic joy!
Even more on this:
You are “a secret spring…that no one else can have…” The King in Song of Songs tells the Shulamite (you) that you are “my bubbling fountain hidden from public view.”
He goes on to say that “your inward life is now sprouting, bringing forth fruit” and that “a beautiful paradise unfolds within you.”
This beautiful paradise that is unfolding within you is so beautiful because it’s where you and God dwell together in unity! Song of Songs 4:9 describes us as God’s beloved, his equal, and His bride. Rest in the fact that you are more than human. You are a garden enclosed meant to be wrapped in all the goodness and pleasure of Christ! How’s that for an identity?! WAAHOOOO! It’s nearly impossible not to get drop dead drunk and whacked off this stuff!
God placed inside us the very thing that draws Him to us
If you haven’t noticed, Song of Songs four is my absolutely favorite.
Here’s some more for you to lap up like a thirsty cat slurping ice cold milk on a hot day:
“When I’m near you, I smell aromas of the finest spice, for many clusters of MY exquisite fruit now grow within your inner garden.” The verse then goes on to list nine that are within you. I won’t name them here because I’m interested in something else this verse says. God smells the aroma of HIS exquisite fruit growing on the inside of you in that special secret garden. God places inside of you the very thing that will draw Him to you! We never stood a chance!
God puts these fruits that smell delicious inside us and then because He’s placed them inside of us He’s drawn to us. He draws to us and then we are overcome by His radical and ravishing love of grace and passion and kindness and pleasure that we give ourselves more and more to Him! Then even more fruit is planted and it smells even better so God is drawn to us even greater than before and the cycle goes around and around and around! Oh, this love is oozy like hot honey dripping from the mouth of God!
You are His DeLiGhT
If I haven’t made it completely clear that God delights in you and is ravenously in love with you, I’m not sure what I’m doing writing. Let me be clear: God loves you. He loves all of you. He sees you ONLY as the holy little nugget of pleasure that you are and HE has placed inside of you His seed that grows into the most delicious smelling fruit that draws Him. You are like the finest honey and God is the big ol’ cuddly bear that just wants to gobble you up!
Rest in your identity as a lover who is loved by the Lover. You are perfect because Perfection lives inside you. God sees you as though you are at the finish line because of what Jesus did for you. Rest. Love. Rest. Love. Rest. Love. This is your mantra.
Have a great weekend!
