John 14:20 in the Voice reads like this: you will know that I am in the Father, you are in Me, and I am in you.

I’ve been thinking about John 14:20 for a while now. Jesus in the father, me in Jesus, and Jesus in me. I made a small sketch in a notebook about it one day at work. Trying to work it out with a Venn Diagram, circles within circles, and some simple words.

Jesus is in the father.

I am in Jesus.

Jesus is in me.

I was contemplating this last night at church. Rolling it around and around in my head, God spoke: We’re like matryoshka dolls, he said. I’m the big nesting doll. Jesus is inside me. You are inside Jesus and he is inside you. Together we are a one circuit system. Together we are one. This is our mystical union.

Mystical Union

Christianity is a mystical religion. Jesus died on the cross bearing the sin of the world and when he died, he murdered us too! He took our old man, our sin nature, and took us to the grave with him. Then he resurrected us with him. This is new life! This means that we’re not even us anymore. This means that we are literally Christians…little Christs. We’ve been consumed by the love of God.

So many people avoid this revelation: we’ve been possessed by the goodness and person of Jesus!

This is why we get baptized. Although it is often taught that if you don’t get baptized, you’ll not really be saved, it seems that’s not the truth.

We get baptized as a symbol of our faith and life in Christ. We’ve already been baptized outside of the dunking tank on the church stage! We were baptized in Christ at his death! He took us to the grave with him, he lifted us from death, and he set us right again with him at his right hand! Ephesians 2:6 in the Berea Study Bible says it wonderfully: And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with Him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus…

The Aramaic Bible in Plain English says it well too: And he has raised us up with him and seated us with himself in Heaven in Yeshua The Messiah…

We are seated in Heaven IN JESUS…RIGHT NOW!

You are not just at your desk or on the train ride home reading from your phone or iPad. You are right now seated in Heaven INSIDE Jesus. This is the mystical reality we live in daily.

You are so beloved by God that he jumped into you and let you jump inside him all while he’s living inside the Father.

Let this concept sink in and intoxicate you over the next few days. It’s wild. It’s inhebriating Jesus Juice at it’s very finest.

No Work Needed

You don’t have to do anything to arrive at your union with Jesus. You are just there. You didn’t do anything to get God to love you and you certainly didn’t do anything to convince Jesus to rescue you from the pit of sin and destruction. Ephesians 2, again, sheds some light on this: For by grace you are saved through faith, and this not of yourselvesit is the gift of God, 9 not as a result of works, so that no one may boast (Berean Literal Bible).

You are in Christ because he wanted you to be with him forever! No amount of serving in Children’s Church or volunteering to clean the church parking lot got you into God’s grace. It doesn’t matter that you’ve logged 100,000 flight miles as a missionary or raised 15 people from the dead. God is not impressed with your work. He’s impressed with your faith.

Your faith didn’t save you even. You were saved through faith. And this faith is “not of yourselves.” Your faith is a person. It’s Jesus! Jesus, your faith, saved you from sin and destruction. You didn’t do one single thing, you didn’t life a finger, to get into this union with Jesus.

Your only job is rest

Our only job is to lay back and rest in the finished work of the cross. Jesus did all our work for us while he was there. Our faith looks a whole lot like doing nothing. We rest in the truth and the knowledge of what we are told in Ephesians 2. We simply believe that we are in him, in the father, a mystical matryoshka.

That word BELIEVE may drive you insane. It did me.

I can believe anything I want. That doesn’t mean it’s true.

But it is true. And when you begin to just give up and choose to buy into this simple message, this message so simple and so clear a kindergartner can get it, you begin to change and grow and fall more and more into this intoxicating love with Jesus.

Rest in his love. Do as Song of Songs 5:1 says, “be drunk with love.”

I love you! Have a great week.
